Ancient secrets cannot remain buried forever.

Founded two centuries ago by an aloof and powerful tribe of Gottwa Indians, Rowan was a quiet town, so quiet that I fled after graduation. Staying away was the plan, but Mom died suddenly, so I rushed home.

Dad said she suffered a stroke after she dug up one of the ancient graves in our backyard, which happens to be the town cemetery. Creepy, I know. Creepier still, there was no corpse inside the old coffin, only fresh rose petals.

As we made preparations for Mom’s burial, Cruz, the new medical examiner, arrived. I should have felt relieved, but how could I? He was unnervingly handsome, glowed like a human firefly, and knew absolutely nothing about examining dead bodies.

But, he did know what killed my mother…or rather who.

I'm not typically a big fan of fae books, but the description for Rose Petal Graves immediately pulled me in when I read it on NetGalley. In this book, Wildenstein has crafted a unique tale full of romance, betrayal, and mystery. Although the novel is on the shorter side, Wildenstein has wonderfully set up a series here, giving readers just enough information and background to stick with her going forward.

The story begins with the death of Cat's mother. A rather somber subject to begin a series off on, sure, but it's her mother's death that ultimately sets Cat on a new and mysterious journey over the course of Rose Petal Graves. What makes Wildenstein's take on fae standout is the rich history she provides for not only the fae, but also Cat's family. Not only does she craft this rich world, full of intriguing and complex characters, but she also takes the usual tropes in those books and adds her own flair to them.

Although Cat did come off as unlikable from time to time, I could understand her actions given the fact that she was still grieving. And then add in the fact that she'd had this entire new world and mythology thrust upon her? Cat's frustration and anger made sense. I'm hoping that going forward, however, we'll see another side to Cat, especially as things continue between her and Cruz.

Overall, Rose Petal Graves is a thoroughly enjoyable read and I'm already anticipating the sequel!

General Overview-

‘What! It ended! So soon… I had just started reading it…’ My reaction when I finished this novella.

I don’t think I need to say more about how engrossed I was in it. Though the beginning was slightly creepy, yet the book quickly pulled me into its story-line. The blend of a fine plot, strong characters, good pace brought out a splendid tale.

I was a little apprehensive about the book, as the story started with a death- that too in a house whose backyard is a cemetery! Along with this, the female protagonist- Catori- firmly believes that her mother’s death is a murder. However, my doubts took a backseat as the story progressed into a series of incidents which made me grasp the book till its’ very end.

Plot

The novella speeds up with the appearance of a book, which introduces Catori to a world, which she considered as - just a myth. She is surprised when she is able to connect the things written in the book to the happenings around her. Things become more complicated with the arrival of a mysterious Medical Examiner. As Catori unfolds the mysteries hidden long ago, she is made aware of her actual identity. Keeping up with all this, she desperately pursues her search for the reason behind her mother’s death.

Pros

The beauty of this novella is that it completely sucks the reader in the whirlwind of events from the very beginning. I was also impressed by the fact that even with such fast changing plots, there was no confusion in understanding the story. Usually with so many events and characters being introduced at such smaller intervals, the reader rereads the previous pages to catch up. But, I couldn’t find a single event when I had to look back to understand it.

Other trait of the book is the creation of a doubtful atmosphere around the female protagonist. She is surrounded by many people among whom some are friends and some foes. The author skilfully provided such evidences that one is just left guessing about the credibility of the characters. At one point of time the character seems like a friend to Catori and in the next completely opposite. The suspense created about the characters intrigued me till I finished reading it.

Cons

I think the novella was left at an extremely high note which gave me a feeling of utter frustration and helplessness. It looked more like a hasty ending than a continuing thread for the next book. Totally a cliffhanger, but too high for me to reach ;)

Conclusion

All in all, the novella is very interesting to read. With a touch of Native American Mythology, the book keeps you on edge. The characters are well developed and the reader can easily connect with their mindset.
Olivia Wildenstein did it again...she is so good at making me think I know exactly what's going to happen and who the good guys are and then she makes me doubt everything! A story that is rich in detail and mood. Waiting for the sequel!
Cat is on her way home from college due to the sudden death of her mother. On her return to the small town of Rowan, a strange medical examiner shoes up. Cat starts discovering that her mother was looking into their heritage when she died. She starts to find strange things like empty graves with rose petals. She is quickly drawn into the world of hunters and faes. How will she make sense of it all and how will she figure out who's telling the truth to which side she should be on?

In an Oyster Shell - It was a quick provocative read that will keep you turning the pages.

The Pearls - The plot was full of twists and turns and in the end you still didn't know which way was up. It was an exciting introduction to the series. I can't wait to read more. I keep stalking the author's page for updates on the next book. The story was riveting. A young lady is going to her mother's funeral but that's only the beginning.
